American Heart Association/CareFirst Plant Day at City Springs
On April 1, volunteers from the American Heart Association and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield facilitated a school-wide Plant Day at City Springs Elementary/Middle School to install a new American Heart Association Teaching Garden. The teaching garden, which was funded by CareFirst, consists of child-friendly planter beds constructed by hand, soil, seedlings and standard gardening supplies.
Preparations for Plant Day began in the fall, after CareFirst provided funding for the project. City Springs completed a comprehensive survey to assure the school's commitment to the program and established a Teaching Garden Committee to oversee the program. The committee, led by City Springs staff member Mark Tatum, received special training from the American Heart Association to help guide their responsibilities and set out to plan the big day.
The Big Day
Plant Day began with welcoming remarks from Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, CareFirst Senior Vice President Maria Tildon, American Heart Association Executive Director Yvette Mingo and City Springs Principal Rhonda Richetta. Throughout the day every class at City Springs had the opportunity to participate in building the garden. Students also enjoyed Zumba and other health-focused activities.
What's Next?
Mr. Tatum will use the American Heart Association's Teaching Garden Curriculum to engage students in fun, educational, hands-on investigations of nutritious fruits and vegetables in and out of the garden. The American Heart Association also provided City Springs with a Teaching Garden Tool Kit, containing a school garden manual, lesson plans, school activation ideas, and parent and community resources.
With oversight from American Heart Association staff, the Teaching Gardens program will also provide volunteer opportunities for the community.
CareFirst Partnership
Plant Day is the result of a larger partnership CareFirst has developed with City Springs and the Baltimore Curriculum Project. Fostered by Business Volunteers Maryland and led by CareFirst's Maria Tildon, CareFirst used existing relationships with area nonprofits to develop and foster programs that help City Springs meet its students' health and wellness needs.
The CareFirst Partnership Program also includes CareFirst employee mentorships with City Spring students through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chesapeake's "Bigs in Schools." CareFirst employees serve as mentors, spending an hour a week eating lunch, talking, and playing games with their "Little," or mentee.
On April 25, the Baltimore Curriculum Project and Business Volunteers will honor CareFirst employee Carolyn Dorsey with a BCP Outstanding Business Volunteer Award for her service as a "Bigs in Schools" mentor and as a member of Business Volunteer's INSPIRE attendance team at City Springs.
In the coming months, CareFirst and City Springs plan to expand their Partnership Program to include Girls on the Run of Greater Chesapeake, a nonprofit independent council that inspires girls in third through eighth grades to gain confidence and improve their health by training for a 5-kilometer run.

BCP Schools Featured in Brew Article on BEC Gubernatorial Forum
Eric Castañeda addressing gubernatorial candidates and audience on why Wolfe Street Academy needs a gym. Photo by: Fern Shen |
Fern Shen's March 7, 2014 article about the BEC Gubernatorial Candidates Forum in the Baltimore Brew features students and staff from City Springs Elementary/Middle School and Wolfe Street Academy. The event was held at City Springs Elementary/Middle School and the Baltimore Curriculum Project worked with other coalition members to plan and run the event: https://www.baltimorebrew.com/2014/03/07/city-school-advocates-press-gubernatorial-candidates-at-forum/
Below are some excerpts from the article:
What’s it like to attend a public elementary school that lacks a gym?
A 9-year-old student from Wolfe Street Academy in Upper Fells Point explained it Wednesday night to the three Democratic candidates running for governor as well as to a crowd of more than 300.
“Right now, we spend the winter and rainy days playing whatever we can between the cafeteria tables,” said 4th-grader Eric Castañeda.
In good weather they go to a small blacktop area outside. Or they go to a lane behind the school, where the gym teacher uses cones to block off traffic and has the children walk on the sidewalk, keeping track of the distance as part of Wolfe Street’s “Mileage Club.”
“There aren’t a lot of sports leagues in our neighborhood and there is not a lot of open area a safe walking distance away,” Castañeda said.
“I want to learn to play basketball. I want to run. I want to be able to play real sports year-round. . . Please help us get a gym at Wolfe Street Academy.”
...
Tackling the facilities question, [Delegate Heather Mizeur] offered a stark and pertinent example – the City Springs building itself that was hosting the event is so overcrowded that, earlier in the day, some students taking the Maryland School Assessment tests had to sit in the gymnasium.
“And the children were in coats,” Mizeur pointed out.
(Principal Rhonda Richetta later confirmed this, saying, “There is a problem with heat in the gym” and noting that when she first came to the school there were 300 students. Now there are almost 700. With space that tight, making the special accommodations some students needed for the test posed a seating problem and meant students were seated in the hallways as well as the gym.)
How to find funding for the second set of schools, places like the Wolfe Street Academy, which are not scheduled for repairs in the first round of construction funding? (Wolfe Street’s place on the list puts a gym or other upgrades 10 years away.)

BCP Announces Winners of the First Annual "BCP Outstanding Business Volunteer Awards"
(BALTIMORE, MD - April 4, 2014) - The Baltimore Curriculum Project and Business Volunteers Maryland have announced the winners of the First Annual BCP Outstanding Business Volunteer Awards.
This year's honorees -- Carolyn Dorsey of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Mohannad Jishi of M&T Bank, and Trent Zivkovich of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston -- will be recognized at the Baltimore Curriculum Project's annual fundraising gala, Are You Smarter than a BCP 5th Grader? on Friday, April 25th at The Reginald F. Lewis Museum.
The Baltimore Curriculum Project and Business Volunteers created The BCP Outstanding Business Volunteer Awards to honor individuals from local businesses who have dedicated their time and talent to supporting City Schools.
"We are very grateful for the wonderful volunteers whom Business Volunteers has connected with our schools," said Laura Doherty.
"Their work has made a real difference in the lives of our students."
Carolyn Dorsey, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
Carolyn serves as a mentor with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program at City Springs Elementary/Middle School. She also serves on Business Volunteers' INSPIRE team at City Springs, which implements strategies to "inspire" students to attend school every day.
"Carolyn has been an amazing volunteer at City Springs this year. She has gone above and beyond as both a mentor and INSPIRE attendance team member. Carolyn has remained dedicated, motivated, and excited throughout the entire school year," said Simone Garrison, Child First Community School Coordinator at City Springs.
"She has taken on personal responsibility to make sure that our students have incentives that make them excited to come to school everyday. I am so thankful to have her on our team, and hope that she will continue to volunteer with us in the years to come!"
The Big Brothers Big Sisters program at City Springs is made possible through the generous support of CareFirst. Business Volunteers brokered the partnership between CareFirst and City Springs in 2013.
Business Volunteers' INSPIRE Program partners with schools to incentivize and educate students on the importance of attendance. The City Springs team of volunteers is led by Tom Caron, Business Volunteers' Manager of Business Engagement.
Mohannad Jishi, M&T Bank
Mo was matched with Hampstead Hill Academy Principal Matt Hornbeck through Business Volunteers' PENCIL Affiliate Program. Mo helped Principal Hornbeck develop a school finance "dashboard," allowing him to assess the school's financial health on a regular basis. This improved system laid the groundwork for the school to begin long-range planning activities.
"It's really useful when you have a thought partner of Mo's caliber," said Principal Hornbeck.
"He was a really good listener and he took some of the strategies that work in his field and helped apply them to the context we have here in a neighborhood public school."
Business Volunteers' PENCIL Affiliate Program inspires innovation and improves student achievement by partnering business leaders with public schools.
Trent Zivkovich, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston
Trent led a Business Volunteers GIVE team, which supported career and college readiness at Wolfe Street Academy.
"Mr. Zivkovich was thorough and enthusiastic in his leadership of a team of business volunteers, which brought the world of college and work to our students and families," said Connie Phelps, SWCOS Community School Coordinator at Wolfe Street Academy.
"They arranged a career day for our fourth and fifth graders, and raised funds for the kids and their parents to spend a day at Towson University learning about all that universities have to offer and how to access it. "
Business Volunteers' GIVE Program is a 10-month program designed to raise awareness among the next generation of civic leaders about the growing need for volunteerism in Greater Maryland. Trent's team also included: Carolyn Funsch of Legg Mason, Mallory McDonald of Legg Mason, Aaron Nodar of M&T Bank, and Joseph Rabinowicz of Rosenberg Martin Greenberg, LLP.
Are You Smarter than a BCP 5th Grader?
The BCP Outstanding Business Volunteer Awards ceremony will be one element of BCP's annual Are You Smarter than a BCP 5th Grader? fundraising gala, which features a fun-filled quiz show, dinner, drinks, live music and a silent auction.

Notre Dame of Maryland University Supports Wolfe Street Academy
Tutors from Notre Dame of Maryland University's School of Nursing |
Wolfe Street Academy, the Baltimore Curriculum Project and Notre Dame of Maryland University's School of Nursing have formed a partnership to create a new tutoring program at Wolfe Street Academy (WSA).
Last May Dr. Sabita Persaud, RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Coordinator of the Community Health program at Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDM), reached out to the Baltimore Curriculum Project to discuss potential opportunities for a partnership. After identifying Wolfe Street Academy's after-school program as the best fit, Sabita met with WSA Director of Extended Student Services Kathy Stroup to flesh out the details.
The NDM tutoring program began with an in-service training/orientation led by Kathy Stroup, BCP Academic Coach Sue Lattimore, and WSA Instructional Support Teacher Rosemary Byron on January 30th. This was followed by a "Get-to-Know-You" session with the tutors and their small groups of students.
"The fifteen Notre Dame nursing students were very enthusiastic and brought five more volunteers than expected," said Sue Lattimore.
The tutors engaged thirty-three WSA students in targeted academic games and homework support designed to meet the students' individual needs. Games and songs were used to reinforce key skills identified by the students' teachers.
Since February 6th, the tutors have worked with students once a week from 3:30pm -5:00pm.
"This is a wonderful boost for the Wolfe Street students and the Notre Dame volunteers report that they feel very effective and supported by Wolfe's teachers." said Sue Lattimore.
Every third or fourth session, the tutors have had a mini-training session to teach them additional games, cheers, and strategies for helping the students master skills that are directly linked to what they need to succeed in their classroom programs.
"Connecting after-school with Sabita has
been a fantastic opportunity for us. In addition to providing tutoring, the nursing students are sponsoring our upcoming health fair as part of their class project." said Kathy Stroup.
"Sabita has also donated prizes to help motivate students to engage in extracurricular reading. Amazing!"
We would like to thank Notre Dame of Maryland University's School of Nursing, Dr. Sabita Persaud, RN and all of the nursing students for supporting Wolfe Street Academy.
About the NDM School of Nursing
The Notre Dame of Maryland School of Nursing prepares students to be compassionate and professional nurses in an intimate classroom environment with hands-on experience. Notre Dame of Maryland offers both a Bachelors of Science and a Master of Science in Nursing. Notre Dame's program is small enough to transform individual students through reflective practice, engaging and challenging class discussions and faculty mentoring. Yet it is large enough to help you transform the world through service learning and study abroad opportunities. And Notre Dame nurses often become leaders in academic and service settings, and health-related organizations.
